It's on the AirTable Kaizen List. Thanks Kelsey.
I run a multi-day tour company and have a Cancellation Protection that is slightly more flexible than our general terms. The cost is just 6% of the booking total, not 15% as you recommend. Since our average tour rate is about 3,000 USD per booking I assume 15% would be too much. Result so far? We see that about 10% of our bookers have added Cancellation Protection and we don't see more cancellations. So that is all good! But I wonder if I should offer a more generous Cancellation Protection and charge 15% considering it would be 450 USD on an average booking?
Thanks for sharing Marcus and lovely to hear from ya! I'm glad that you've experimented with this as a multi-day operator, and it sounds like you're getting great results. (for most multi-day operators the protection needs to be though through carefully given you may be on the hook for hotel rooms, down-payments, etc. But you're results so far show that the same benefits seem to apply! As for your 10% opt-in rate at 6% trip protection, on a $3,000USD trip - that is a great result! (it shows customers see the value in the protection plan you put together!). Could you experiment with a higher fee and see what happens to that 10% opt-in rate? Absolutely! You may not need to make the protection plan more generous either. Regardless - a 15% fee on a multi-day trip adds up quickly - and the data I shared in the video suggesting 15% was aggregated day-tour operator results.
Thanks heaps, great strategy 😊❤
I see this benefiting an activity place, but how would you see this being used for a multi-day tour operator where insurance is offered to cover different things other than trip cost, like medical for international, or lost luggage, etc. Would offering Trip Protection then compete with the insurance offering? It could be designed to cover what insurance doesn't, but would/are travelers buying both when offered both or perceived as overkill?
I see travel insurance as a pretty different product - covering a variety of potential incidents depending on the plan - the biggest often being emergency medical insurance for travelling abroad. See the comment from Marcus below for how he is using trip protection as a multi-day operator. Already have a 3rd party insurance plan upsell that covers trip cancellation AND it's converting well? Then just stick with that! = )
Are there any 3rd party companies offering this as a plug-in, or is there a way to implement in-house? My booking software does have this feature but doesn't give me any control of messaging, how it works, etc. Thanks
Thanks for the comment. The recommendation is to use a booking software that allows 'one-click upsells' or 'order bumps' so that this protection can be added effortlessly during checkout. You could work with 3rd party insurance providers to provide these kinds of plans, but the real lift in profits come from running the upsell yourself (and not sharing margin with other companies). I am not aware of any 'plugins' that work with most of the booking software options I'm aware of. Hope that helps!
Thank you for this video Kelsey! We were on the fence about adding this so this has been very helpful.
Love Becky, it's 100% worth test it out! = )

Hi Kelsey, I was 95% with you until you suggested blending both contractors and freelancers in the same operation. It’s great that you point out that you’re not a lawyer, but anyone watching this should 100% speak to a lawyer before taking the advice about having freelancers and employees perform the same roles in the same company. Whether you’re in the USA, the UK, or most of the EU, having freelancers do the same work as employees is a strong legal indication that the freelancer IS a employee, and the company should make the same considerations for this essentially “fake freelancers”. I’m also not a lawyer, but I’ve spent more than €100k researching this exact point across 13 countries, and I can respectfully say that you’re very likely giving your viewers some dangerous advice to suggest people mix employee and freelance guides in the same company. Happy to consult with anyone needing a bit of help here💪🏼🙏🚀 Best wishes, Chris Sandeman
Hey Chris, thanks for the comment and appreciate your input here! I just want to reinforce Chris's experience with this particular topic - and I would take his comments seriously! Chris, the context where I have seen this 'blended' approach is much more in the multi-day space - and candidly, even in the examples that I'm thinking off, the contractors and employees working for that tour operator were technically performing different roles. (ie tour leaders were employees - but additional support staff (camp cooks, support drivers) were contracted. While this point was made in the video - it's worth emphasizing that in no way can you 'treat, train, or evaluate' a tour guide contractor in the same way you would a tour guide employee on your blended team. I agree that legal consel is important to navigate this - but I still see many situations where this would be entirely legal and even appropriate. e.g. I run day tours in austin and have employed year-roundtour guides. 4x a year there are massive conferences in town where I don't have enough guides - so I contract additional guides individually for these one off events.
Cheers much 😊 Also an employee is likely going to have more local knowledge ❤
Great video and very interesting insight, as always! Thanks Kelsey!

WOW!
Great tips and suggestions
Here's another challenge, somewhat related: what if you suspect that the official "understanding" of an event/person/object was more myth than substance? I was a ranger at Georges Island in Boston Harbor where I gave tours of Fort Warren, a major seacoast fort that operated roughly from the Civil War through WWII. One key tour stop was the fort chapel where, allegedly, the song "John Brown's Body" first originated. But as I learned more about the fort's history, this "fact" seemed increasingly dubious. Like the ubiquitous "George Washington slept here" colonial inns that once dotted the East coast, locations claiming the origin of John Brown's Body were all over the US map. To satisfy the need to entertain while being truthful, I resorted to saying weasel words like "alleged," "attributed," "claimed," etc. If anyone challenged me for the waffling, I would explain why. If not, we would just merrily roll along.
Excellent
I really like your content bro, thanks for inspiring me. Am a tour operator too

Leod Escapes agrees. We are the only motorcycle tour company that serves the desires of "Track Riders" they are different people with different needs. We also recently created tours for NEW motorcycle travelers, people who have never traveled outside the USA before and don't have the massive funds required for the big mass tourism motorcycle operators. Our "Track & Tour" and our "Travel Training Tour" are client dreams focused.
